Abstract

Invasive species are increasingly being acknowledged as one of the most serious environmental problems of our times. Many such species were introduced intentionally. Codes of conduct among groups that contribute to the introduction and spread of invasive species may alleviate some of the problems and contribute to educational efforts. Because a majority of invasive plants appear to be introduced for horticultural purposes, representatives from nurseries, botanical gardens, landscape architecture, the gardening public, and government have developed such codes. The process included building consensus and mutual respect, providing clear feedback, and finding common ground. Implementation of the codes has proven to be challenging for most of the groups but is still moving forward.
